A BOLD NEW VISION At a time when many non-profit organizations are closing their doors, the Tacoma CWC is expanding its programming and partnering with others to better serve the residents of the Upper Tacoma neighborhood. The Tacoma CWC Club House has a long and rich past as a place where the community gathers to address its concerns, interact with its elected officials, celebrate milestones and achievements. In the future, the Tacoma CWC plans to leverage its history as a gathering place into a future as an effective human service partner, delivering culturally relevant programs, housing and education that contribute to a vibrant, livable community. We can see the need. We can meet the need. More than 40 years ago, the determined women of the Tacoma City Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. had a bold vision: build a new clubhouse at 2316 South Yakima Avenue to meet the growing needs of the community. Through faith, perseverance and broad-based community support, they succeeded and local and state dignitaries joined them to dedicate the new building. Today, we dream anew … we seek to maximize our contribution to community betterment by converting our clubhouse into a multicultural civic center that serves the entire South Puget Sound and fuels the continued Hilltop Neighborhood revitalization. To meet the demands of the 21st century, the Tacoma CWC is working to increase its capacity. The club endeavors to create a place wherein all citizens are able to improve themselves and their community through awareness and access to resources. The clubhouse will become home of the new 2316 Multi-cultural Center, and as in the beginning, will be a place of nourishment, enrichment, empowerment and fun. Since 1944, the Association has lifted families and seniors of all races and ethnic groups in low socio-economic conditions to provide access to education, civic, social and spiritual attainment. Through their tireless dedication, determination and faith, The City Association will continue to deliver programs that foster growth and empowerment in our communities. We are currently working closely with McCarver Elementary School and the Greater Metro Parks Foundation to enrich the lives of children and strengthen the families of McCarver Elementary. In October, 2009, the Tacoma CWC will launch its McCarver Moms parent support program. The McCarver Moms curriculum includes general parenting education classes, a parent support group and mentor program, conflict resolution and interpersonal life-skills training, a library and database of community information, social service referrals, tutoring and therapeutic play for children. The McCarver Moms program and services will be located at the Tacoma CWC’s Club House, within walking distance of McCarver Elementary. As a result of the Greater Metro Parks Foundation Zina Linnik Project at McCarver Park and Wright Park, the program will also be close to a soon-to-be redeveloped McCarver Park. Metro Parks’ preliminary plans for a hard court play area and a community garden at the park will be a perfect complement to the McCarver Moms curriculum. We can see the need. We can meet the need. We’d like to thank you for helping the Tacoma CWC carry out its mission of lifting as we climb. Sincerely, Carol C. Mitchell President |
